A food web is an interconnected food chain. A food chain is a visual representation of feeding relationships between organisms. Food chains and food webs are made of three different groups of organisms. Plants belong to the producers group because they produce their own food. Animals belong to the consumers group because they cannot make their food and must eat plants and/ or other animals. Organisms that feed on decaying matter belong to the decomposers group.

Consumers are categorized into three groups: herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores. Herbivores feed on plants. Carnivores feed on other animals. Omnivores feed on both plants and other animals. Organisms are categorized into trophic levels. Plants are known as primary producers. Herbivores are known as primary consumers. Carnivores that feed on herbivores are known as secondary consumers. Carnivores that feed on other carnivores are called tertiary consumers. Organisms with no predators are known as apex predators.

The deer, mouse, squirrel, and rabbit are primary consumers.
The shrew, wildcat, wild dog, fox, and wolf are secondary consumers.
The jackal and the tiger are tertiary consumers.
