In the story, Nana Healey is Link's former nanny. She had spent the better part of her life working for Link's family. First, she began working for Link's grandparents; when Link's parents married, Nana Healey was given to them as a gift from Link's grandmother.

When Nana Healey came down with tuberculosis, Link tells Melba that his family just "let her go." Despite her years of service for them, Nana Healey received no financial help for her illness nor sympathy for her predicament. According to Link's father, "colored folks are used to doing without" and that it would be weakness to show any sign of caring for them. On the other hand, Link doesn't think the same way. He worries about Nana Healey's health and tries to look in on her periodically. His affection for his former nanny contrasts with his father's callous attitude.
