Which texts qualify as a "literary tragedy"?

A list of all tragedies in literature is a huge list. I will go ahead and list some of the more famous tragedies in order to keep the list more manageable.  


Shakespeare is a good place to start: 


  • Antony and Cleopatra

  • Coriolanus

  • Hamlet 

  • Julius Caesar

  • King Lear

  • Macbeth

  • Othello

  • Romeo and Juliet

  • Timon of Athens

  • Titus Andronicus 

Christopher Marlowe is a contemporary of Shakespeare and has a couple of famous tragedies to his name,...
