International human resource management (IHRM) is concerned with providing training for employee expatriates planning to work in multinational corporations with production factories in more than one nation. The IHRM standard is to provide preparatory training and post-arrival training for expatriates, those who have taken job assignments in another nation.

Preparatory training includes job related skills and cultural knowledge to equip the expatriate to work successfully in a different culture. Preparatory training varies in duration, often ranging between 3-6 weeks. Language education may be part of the training or a second language may be a job requirement. For these employees opening two factories, Chinese and German languages would be the focus of language study. Cultural training might include the topics of Chinese ancestor worship and German attitudes toward World War II references.

Post-arrival training includes on-site job training. The expatriate already has the needed skills, but on-site training helps the expatriate to orient to the physical environment and any site-specific procedures. The host country manager will have been trained in socialization and cultural differences as well as in corporate culture and corporate strategy so as to make the induction of the expatriate smooth and effective while sharpening the focus on corporate expectations and goals.
