The growth rate of a population in a given geographical region is dependent on a number of factors, including those that increase the population and those that decrease it. The number of births, in a given time, will increase the population. In comparison, the number of deaths, in a given time period, will decrease the population. An important factor that causes an increase in the population is the immigration or the entry of new organisms in the area. Similarly, emigration (or departure of organisms from the area) causes a reduction in the population. Thus, four factors are generally considered in determining population growth rate; these include birth, death, immigration and emigration. We can also say that,

Increase in population = births + immigration - death - emigration
