An important factor that causes an increase in the population is the immigration or the entry of new organisms in the area. Similarly, emigration (or departure of organisms from the area) causes a reduction in the population. Thus, four factors are generally considered in determining population growth rate; these include birth, death, immigration and emigration. We can also say that,
Increase in population = births + immigration - death - emigration
